Skuid Mobile Application Design¶
Warning
As of November 2016, the mobile composer has been deprecated. What does this mean?
- App builders with deployed mobile apps will continue to have access to the mobile composer and able to update pages in those mobile apps.
- With Skuid v11, new users (and those with no mobile pages) will have no access to the mobile composer. Unpacking a page pack containing Skuid Mobile pages will re-enable the Mobile Composer option.
Skuid strongly advises using the unified Composer.
Return to mobile composer index.
Below are some key concepts that support building effective mobile applications on the Salesforce.com platform using Skuid.
Bring out the Best Qualities of Different Screen Sizes¶
We are convinced that very different kinds of work can be done on a big screen or on a small phone. Business applications should be designed with this in mind.
- The big screen displays massive amount of data so that it can be explored analyzed and manipulated. The big screen should not be hobbled.
- Smartphones and Tablets are good for notification and immediately completing focused tasks. You should not have to pinch and zoom through a desktop interface to find what they are looking for.
Applications should leverage strengths of the respective form factors to make user experience compelling in each space.
When designing a Mobile application, don’t think about merely replicating the desktop experience. Start with user tasks and needs and focus on the ones that can be:
- Discovered intuitively
- Accomplished quickly in a small form factor
- Completed on the go
- Require a small number of clicks.
Let user need drive design. Use Skuid to rapidly prototype and deploy solutions.
Key Design Principles¶
Mobile applications will be successful when your users can
- Immediately get from notification to task completion.
- Complete tasks in as few steps as possible. (Eliminate hops. Eliminate page loads.)
- Feel success as quickly as possible.
Examples of use cases that seem well targeted for mobile applications¶
There are a number of business scenarios that seem to be perfect for mobile implementation:
- Workflow authorization. Present a decision maker with an issue. Give a simple way to indicate a decision, or authorization. Move the business process forward.
- Limited data update. Let users update a small number of fields on multiple objects.
- Message Scanning. Review chatter messages or activities.
Skuid to the Rescue!¶
The standard answer for building mobile applications on Salesforce has been custom development. Remind you of Visualforce and Apex development for standard desktop views? Just like Skuid has revolutionized the delivery of complex business solutions on the desktop, Skuid Mobile lets you create pages tailored to meet user need without hiring a development staff. You can modify these pages over time. No need to re-deploy packages. No worries about sufficient test code coverage. You can roll out these pages in a variety of ways so that your users get what they need to be effective.
